Candidates at the Hendrick Hudson forum repeatedly identified the district’s fiscal outlook as the primary challenge facing trustees. Several speakers said the district has relied on cessation or pilot funding related to Indian Point and has been drawing on reserves; Jeremy Basso and others described a roughly $4 million annual budget gap driven by the drawdown of a cessation fund and contractual obligations.
Candidates described steps taken or proposed to manage the gap. Erica Mills and others said the board adopted 0‑based budgeting practices and established reserve accounts and a tax stabilization reserve. Bernard and Mills said they have pursued external funding and legislative assistance: Mills noted work with state and federal officials and Jeremy said Senator Harcombe provided about $1 million to the district in recent years. Bernard said the prior board and administration planned and passed a roughly $30,000,000 capital project.
On balancing taxpayer burden and program quality, candidates stressed prioritizing classroom staff and student programs while seeking efficiencies. Jeremy said the board must “utiliz[e] the tax cap” and make public conversations when proposals would exceed available reserves; other candidates favored targeted cuts to noncore spending such as outside consultants and use of attrition or retirement incentives rather than staff layoffs.
No formal budget decisions were made at the forum; candidates described continuing advocacy with legislators and reliance on the superintendent and administrative team to bring actionable budget plans to the board.
