At a June 18 meeting, the Hendrick Hudson Central School District Board of Education voted to approve the districtwide safety plan following a public hearing and a roughly 30-day public comment period.
The plan "is the forward-facing safety and security posture of the district," said Mr. Trombley, a district administrator who presented the proposal and fielded questions during the hearing. He said building-level safety plans will remain confidential and "are reviewed at the building level. The Board of Education reviews them in a confidential manner as well." The districtwide plan, he added, will be posted online for public review.
The hearing was part of an annual review process. Trombley told the board the districtwide plan was developed by a stakeholder committee that meets monthly and includes board members. He said the committee is led by a outside security consultant, Amanda Dosvakam Moskalo. "We review annually how our district responds to various safety and security events," Trombley said. He clarified that the districtwide plan sets the overall posture while confidential building plans contain site-specific procedures and later will be submitted to the state after board approval.
Board President Susan Mills opened the public hearing; no members of the public spoke during the hearing. After discussion, the board moved and seconded a motion to approve the districtwide safety plan draft and voted in favor. There were no recorded roll-call objections during the meeting record on the vote.
The board and administration stressed that building safety plans would not be released publicly because they contain operational details. Administration said those building plans will be approved and submitted to the state in a later, confidential review. The district will post the approved districtwide plan on its website and continue to convene the safety committee for ongoing review and updates.
The district also noted that the safety plan work is coordinated with annual updates to the code of conduct; the board will address the code of conduct in the policy section of a subsequent meeting.
Implementation: administration said building-level plans would be finalized and submitted to the state after board action. The district encouraged the public to review the districtwide plan on the district website and to provide input when future comment windows open.
