Elgin — The Elgin City Council appointed Council member Love as deputy mayor pro tem, with council members saying the appointment will help build succession and provide backup leadership.

The mayor explained the council wanted to “begin a succession plan” and that Love had expressed interest in the role. The mayor added that senior council members would mentor Love as she assumes additional duties.

A motion to appoint Love as deputy mayor pro tem was made and seconded; the council recorded aye votes on the motion and the appointment was approved.

Council members congratulated Love and the council moved on to subsequent agenda items.
