The Lorain County Board of Commissioners approved a $17,025 expenditure from the Lorain County Honor Fund to assist American Legion Post 162 in Wellington with capital repairs following a May 12 flood.
Jacob Smith, director of Lorain County Vets, told commissioners the Honor Fund “was established a number of years ago… to help with post maintenance, memorials, and occasionally workforce development.” Smith and Al, commander of Post 162, described flood damage to the post’s boiler and water systems and said the post has raised funds but needs the Honor Fund grant to replace a furnace and hot-water tanks and to raise mechanicals off the ground to reduce future flood vulnerability.
Why it matters: the Honor Fund supports veterans’ posts that lack budget capacity for capital repairs; the board agreed this was an emergency request and approved the one-off expenditure so the post could pay vendors promptly while insurance or other reimbursements are pursued.
Board action: the motion to approve was made and seconded; the board voted yes. Commissioners thanked the veterans for attending.
