Beltrami County staff and non‑profit partners operated an emergency shelter at the Sanford Center immediately after the June 20–21 storm and later transitioned the location into a resource and disaster assistance center.
Amy (Public Health Emergency Preparedness staff) led the county’s shelter operation with Red Cross volunteers and local partners. “We served a total of 4,838 people and a total of 3,253 households,” Amy said in the work session briefing, adding that volunteers logged about 400 hours and that 164 people spent the night at the shelter.
The Sanford Center provided space for residents to charge phones, get water and receive meals while power and services were restored. Bobby Anderson, general manager of the Sanford Center, supplied onsite support and helped secure food and utilities during the first days of the response, county staff said.
County staff tracked shelter needs, registrations and the number of meals provided; Amy said the shelter later closed and the site shifted to a resource center run with the Salvation Army, United Way and community organizations to assist residents seeking housing, repairs and other recovery services.
Why this matters: The shelter handled both displaced residents and first responders in the immediate aftermath and is now a focal point for recovery services. County staff asked residents to preserve receipts and photos for insurance and reimbursement purposes.
What’s next: Staff said they will provide more detailed shelter and household-level data at a future meeting, and that the resource center will continue coordinating referrals with the county and charitable partners.
