The Holdridge City Council approved a request from the Iron Horse Creative Arts District to install artist-designed crosswalk panels and to expand festoon lighting in parts of downtown.
Cassie Ehrenberg, executive director of the Iron Horse Arts District, presented designs and a map showing proposed crosswalk murals on Fifth and East Avenues and a phase-two extension of the district’s existing festoon lighting. Ehrenberg said the crosswalk panels would be painted on concrete areas (not brick) and that local artists were selected through a request-for-proposals process; the project would invite community volunteers to assist with painting, using stencils and supervised work sessions.
Ehrenberg estimated that crosswalk murals need repainting every one to two years and said the district would coordinate scheduling so work could be done over a weekend (for example, a Friday afternoon through Sunday midday) to limit weekday impacts. She also said a grantor was covering project costs and that the city would not incur direct expenses for the work.
Council members asked questions about design review, durability and traffic impacts; staff noted that the older streetlight poles on one block would require a load study before lighting can be attached. After discussion, a councilmember moved, and the council voted to accept the Iron Horse request as presented.
The council approved the lighting and crosswalk projects and authorized staff to coordinate necessary closures and technical checks (load study for poles) to support installation. The city did not identify ongoing maintenance responsibilities in detail during the meeting; Ehrenberg said the district anticipates periodic repainting and community volunteers would be involved.
