Catherine Cathers, the city’s arts and culture coordinator, outlined the proposal from the Cultural Development Board and the Arts Advisory Panel: five site‑responsive installations displayed at hotels, plazas and public spaces across downtown Coral Gables during Miami Art Week, with participating galleries invited to partner on artist selection. Board members stressed that the project would continue beyond the Art Week dates and would seek wider gallery and hotel partnerships as the program matures. "This is an indoor‑outdoor gallery," Cathers said, describing pop‑up installations inside lobbies and in public plazas.
The commission approved the program unanimously and clarified funds will be drawn from the Art in Public Places reserves, not general revenues. Commissioners emphasized the initiative’s potential to increase foot traffic for downtown businesses and to position Coral Gables as a cultural destination during the regional art fair season.
Separately commissioners approved the city’s FY2026 cultural grant awards, a package the Cultural Development Board compiled after reviewing 52 applications — a 7‑application increase from the prior year. The board recommended funding for organizations operating music, theater, dance, gallery and youth programs across Coral Gables; the city will continue the dedicated $50,000 category for youth arts organizations. The Cultural Development Board reported the grants support an estimated 1,300 events across the city, and many applicants proposed free programming and school‑based outreach.
