School board approves spot survey amendment declaring one facility “no longer needed” and to send report to DOE

The Taylor County School District Board of Education voted to approve a spot survey amendment and directed staff to submit the document to the Florida Department of Education.

Board members debated a new sentence added to the survey that states the district “deems this facility no longer needed.” Several board members and staff discussed whether strike-through marks and historical annotations should remain in the document and where the verbiage originated.

The item’s presenter said the wording came from the person who prepared the survey; board members asked staff whether the language met state requirements. A staff member noted the added statutory sentence had been copied from Florida statute and recommended sending the document as presented; the Department of Education would notify the district if further corrections were required. The board approved the motion to send the spot survey to DOE; one member voted no, saying the language was unclear.

Board members who spoke during the discussion urged caution but accepted staff assurance that the DOE would require any necessary amendments if the submission did not meet requirements. The board recorded a formal motion to approve the spot survey for submission; the motion was seconded and carried.

The board did not adopt substantive policy in this vote: the action approved the submission of the spot survey as an interim document to the DOE, with staff to address any DOE-requested changes afterward.

The district will wait for any DOE response and, if needed, return to the board with amendments for further action.
