The Lafayette City Council on July 1 approved on first reading Ordinance No. 13, Series 2025, to authorize a lease of less than one acre of Coal Creek Open Space to 3 Leaf Farm LLC for pasture and rotational grazing.
Melissa (Community Services director) and Dennis Warrington (Parks and Open Space manager) told council the parcel east of Highway 287 and just south of Coal Creek has been leased since February 2018 and renewed in 2021. Melissa said the tenant uses the parcel as dry pasture and rotational grazing; the city has no water rights associated with the lease. Staff said the grazing supports weed control and partners with open-space restoration and public education efforts.
Councilor Lawrence praised the arrangement as a sustainable approach to invasive-species control and noted 3 Leaf Farm’s participation in nearby preserve work and the farmers market. A motion to approve first reading was made and seconded; the council voted by voice and the ordinance passed unanimously on first reading.
The ordinance authorizes the city to continue the lease arrangement and directs staff to proceed under the terms outlined in the ordinance. No roll-call vote with individual member votes was recorded in the meeting minutes; the mayor called the motion passed unanimously.
