Norm (Norman), emergency communications staff, requested county approval to purchase nine UPS units from CDW for 9‑1‑1 workstations as part of a UPS replacement project and three APC rack-mounted automatic transfer switches for equipment without dual power-supply capabilities. He said the UPS units will power workstations during transition and add redundancy to the primary UPS; the transfer switches will automatically switch power sources if the primary UPS fails and will add dual redundancy for single-source equipment, including SAC Regional 9‑1‑1 equipment.
The total costs presented were $11,475 for the nine UPS units and $4,134 for the three transfer switches, with funding coming from prior years’ unspent grant funds. A commissioner confirmed the purchases will make systems more robust, and the board approved both items by voice vote.
The purchases are intended to reduce the risk of outages until generator systems take over, with the presenter noting that UPS provides immediate battery backup until the generator kicks in. Staff indicated the purchases were needed to ensure continuity of emergency communications during power transitions.
