District finance staff presented renewals for property, liability, workers’ compensation and other business insurance for the 2025–26 policy year and recommended no deductible changes for 25–26. The committee approved moving the renewals to the full board for action.
“I'm presenting here tonight is, our update to our insurance for the 2526 school year,” said staff member Missus Ellwood, who told members the premiums were “pretty close to where they were last year.” She noted the district could reduce the premium by $17,952 by increasing the property deductible from $50,000 to $100,000 but said she would not recommend that change because it would shift more claim exposure to the district.
Board members pressed for details about rate drivers and procurement. A board member characterized a roughly 20% increase in workers’ compensation and asked for historical context. Ellwood said the district’s experience-modification factor — a workers’ compensation metric — rose from 1.05 to 1.38, driving higher premium costs; she also explained Tricor is the district’s broker and that carriers (EMC for main coverage) underwrite the policies.
Members sought clarity on coverages described in the premium summary (inland marine, linebacker, global) and why some coverages are pooled. Ellwood said inland marine covers transportable equipment, linebacker covers certain executive-team liability, and global covers staff travel overseas. Board members asked whether multiple proposal options and premiums are provided; staff explained Tricor solicits markets and secures proposals, and some coverages (such as workers’ comp in the pool) do not have multiple bid options.
Action: The committee approved forwarding the insurance renewals — with the coverage term starting 07/01/2025 — to the full board for approval. Members asked staff for follow-up detail on the property extra-expense line and requested clarification on categories used in general liability schedules.
