Chartwells presents year-one review and grants update; district continues Community Eligibility Provision

Chartwells representatives and district staff summarized the first full year of the food-service contract and highlighted participation, grant awards and summer meal sites.
“Good evening. This is our amazing Chartwells team for the food service program,” said Chartwells presenter Sarah as she introduced staff including Jeb Warner (district chef), Holly Goodwin (assistant director), Tara Miller (dietitian) and Amy Kerrigan (district manager). Chartwells reviewed National School Lunch Program history and the district’s long-running use of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which the presenters said has allowed Beloit students to eat free for the last 11 years.
In grants and aid, the district learned it was approved for a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant for next year at $99,000, the presenters said. Chartwells staff noted an equipment-grant application for $30,000 was still under review. They also described monthly efforts to submit Title I claims and said some Medicaid reimbursements are allocated between fund 10 and fund 27 depending on the year of the cost settlement.
Participation trends and programming: Chartwells said breakfast participation fell at two schools after a change from classroom-delivered breakfast to service at a cart outside the classroom. Staff highlighted new programs like Discovery Kitchen, Global Eats menus, a “mood boost” sampling program run by dietitian Tara Miller, student-choice events at the high school, and a large salad bar pilot at BLA. Chartwells also reported an active summer-food schedule at community sites including the Beloit Public Library, Merrill Community Center and Stateline YMCA.
Board discussion and next steps: Board member Amy Levy asked about poverty thresholds, household income forms and their role in Title I; staff said direct certification covers many households and that household-income forms are used for fee waivers and Title I tracking. Board members asked whether Chartwells would present CEP information to other districts; Chartwells said it is working countywide with UW Extension and neighboring districts. The presentation was informational; no board action was required.
