The Fall River Board of Health on June 30 tabled a variance request from Monica Fernandez to keep backyard chickens at 598 South Almond Street after several neighbors complained the coop was too close to property lines and an in-ground pool.
Inspector Tess (Faust) said she visited the property and found the yard “very clean” and that the applicants had met the department’s application criteria, including a rodent-control contract. Fernandez told the board the family had not yet housed chickens and proposed reducing their request to six birds; neighbors, including a resident who said the coop sat within a few feet of her pool, opposed the current placement and raised odors and pest concerns.
Board members recommended the Fernandez family move or shorten the coop and consult directly with neighbors before returning. The board tabled the request to allow the applicants time to make the changes and show neighbors the proposed new location.
