Scottsdale’s vice mayor proposed and the council approved asking the city attorney and staff to prepare an ordinance to prohibit standing in medians, with the goal of improving traffic safety and clarifying enforcement.
Vice Mayor Jan DeBoskis said the city currently lacks an explicit ordinance banning people from standing in medians (except when crossing at a crosswalk) and that the absence of a rule creates enforcement challenges and safety risks. DeBoskis asked that the city attorney agendize proposed code language to amend Chapter 17 of the Scottsdale Revised Code (Motor Vehicle and Traffic).
The council agreed and directed staff to place the ordinance language on a future agenda. Council members noted that median-safety concerns also relate to campaign signage and pedestrian safety.
Chief Leduc (parked in the audience as referenced) and city attorney Louie Santayo were present during the discussion; the council did not adopt an ordinance during the meeting but approved requesting staff draft and agendize the proposed code change.
