Scottsdale’s mayor asked the council to direct staff to present an update on wildfire mitigation efforts, including the possible application of fire-retardant products used by federal agencies and the status of planned volunteer expansions for proactive fuel mitigation.
Mayor Lisa Boroski said Chief Tom Shannon was preparing mitigation work and that a presentation on current practices, retardant-product application and volunteer program growth would help the council and public understand options ahead of a hot summer.
Council members supported the request and said they wanted an update that covered the narrow technical question of retardant application as well as volunteer program capacity and organization. Councilwoman Solange Whitehead noted interest in aligning volunteer expansion with the city’s NAOS (natural area open space) operations.
The council approved directing staff to agendize a presentation by fire staff; no budget or immediate operational decisions were made at the meeting. Staff will present the department’s status, planned volunteer recruitment and any regulatory or interagency requirements for using fire-retardant products.
