Human Services, Planning and Veterans commissions present annual reports to Scottsdale council

Three Scottsdale advisory bodies — the Human Services Advisory Commission, the Planning Commission and the Veterans Advisory Commission — presented 2024 annual reports and outlined priorities for the coming year.
Mary Jeong, vice chair of the Human Services Advisory Commission, said the commission completed a new Human Services strategic plan for 2025–2028, adopted a five-year consolidated action plan and finished a food-bank expansion that increased daily service capacity. Jeong said the food-bank expansion allows staff to serve many more households per day than prior operations.
William Scarborough, chair of the Planning Commission, told council the commission’s 2024 work included zoning text amendments for adaptive reuse and accessory dwelling units, an Old Town character-area plan amendment, conditional-use permit reviews and abandonments. Scarborough said the commission is focusing on “redevelopment versus growth” as Scottsdale moves closer to buildout and more projects are infill or repositioning work.
Justin Layman, chair of the Veterans Advisory Commission, described a growing slate of veterans events and outreach including a “Scottsdale Salutes” banner program in Old Town, a video podcast series, and expanding recognition ceremonies. Layman said attendance at Memorial Day and Vietnam observances has grown and the commission is exploring a POW/MIA Day event for Sept. 19.
Council members thanked the volunteers and staff liaisons for their work. Council comments emphasized continued coordination between commissions and city staff, attention to state-mandated changes (for planning and ADUs) and partnership on events for veterans.
