The Metro Board of Parks and Recreation on July 1 approved staff’s amended request to apply for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthy Places grant to deliver a Miracle League field and inclusive playground at Cedar Hill Park.
Staff described the grant as valued at approximately $6,000,000 and said it would cover construction of a Miracle League field, an inclusive playground, accessible restrooms, seating, gathering areas and concessions. "Blue Cross Healthy Places build and design partners will construct and manage the project," Director Odom said, adding the grant includes a maintenance fund to help offset Metro Parks resources.
During discussion a board member proposed amending the motion language to seek approval for application and submission only, removing "ultimate acceptance" pending review of grant signage and detailed terms. The board voted to approve the amended motion. Chair Michelle Steele announced the motion passed.
Staff noted no Metro matching funds would be required and that the project is in Council District 3. The department later corrected an earlier figure in the presentation, stating an updated project value of about $6 million rather than $5 million.
The vote authorized staff to pursue the application; the board did not execute an acceptance of grant terms at the meeting. Director Odom and staff will return with details should Metro be offered the award.
