Members of a local radio‑control model airplane club told commissioners July 1 that the grass runway on the county landfill — where the club has operated for about 18 years — is sinking and needs leveling so pilots can continue to use the field safely.
Club representatives said the runway settlement is natural for a landfill cap and that rainwater has washed soil from some areas, creating holes and washouts. They said the condition is preventing operators of larger (and more expensive) aircraft from using the field without damaging landing gear.
The club asked whether the county could add topsoil and level the field; they emphasized they do not want to disturb the landfill cap and said they would prefer grass rather than asphalt. County staff said the landfill’s 30‑year monitoring period runs until December 2026 and that any work must avoid disturbing the cap. The board asked Tiffany (county staff) to inspect the runway and determine what maintenance can be performed without risking landfill integrity.
Commissioners and staff agreed that adding fill and reseeding may be feasible if it does not penetrate the cap. The county asked the club to provide contact information so staff can follow up; staff said they will review prior maintenance work already performed at the site and report back to the board.
