County to scan all roads for digital inventory; schedule and cost not yet set

Coffee County commissioners said the county has provided matching funds for a project to scan all county roads and create a digital inventory showing width and condition for each segment.
Benton, a Coffee County highway commission member, told the commission the scanning project will cover paved and gravel roads (the county has about three to four miles of gravel road) and will let staff pull up any location on a computer to see the condition at the time of the scan. He said the scans will allow staff to compare current conditions with roads paved four or five years earlier and “see how good they’re holding up.”
Commissioners said the scanning output will include width measurements and imagery and will be useful for prioritizing maintenance and tracking pavement life. They also noted there will be a learning curve in using the data and that how often roads will be re-scanned and how much that will cost are still to be determined; one commissioner said the schedule and cost are “not specified.”
No procurement or contract award was finalized at the meeting; commissioners described the county’s match but did not provide a dollar figure during the discussion.
