Jones County commissioners on July 1 approved bringing the county’s transit service in-house and set salary grades for positions that will staff the operation.
The action formalizes a change in service delivery after the county’s third‑party operator indicated it would stop providing transit. County staff said the county has assumed day‑to‑day operation and asked the board to approve classification grades so hires can proceed.
Jason (county staff) told the board the recommended grades are dispatcher — grade 105; driver — grade 104; and special projects manager — moved from grade 112 to 114 to oversee the program. Jason said the county will not reduce current drivers’ pay as it transitions the operation into county employment.
Commissioners asked who would manage the program. Jason said Leslie in his office will oversee operations, and staff said the transit coordinator who has run the program for years, identified as Carol, has agreed to stay on during the transition.
The board approved the grades by motion. Commissioners acknowledged the need to continue refining the program’s administrative home and noted the county may revisit the arrangement in six months to a year depending on how the operation performs.
The vote was recorded during the regular meeting with no detailed roll-call published in the transcript. Staff said more operational work remains, including succession planning and training for drivers and administrative coverage.
