Council awards $1.86 million contract and issues notice to proceed for Workman Boulevard extension

The Seward City Council on June 1 approved a $1,855,911.88 construction contract with NE Collins Contracting Company Inc. for the Workman Boulevard extension project and authorized staff to issue a notice to proceed.
Mike, city staff overseeing the project, said the contract covers paving plus sanitary and storm sewer work; the water main is a separate, already-underway project. The contractor submitted required bonds and insurance documents and the city found the paperwork in compliance with contract requirements.
Council members noted that a large portion of the project cost will be covered by the city’s economic development grant (EOP), a Nebraska Department of Transportation grant and a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) the city is administering in partnership; staff estimated those combined grants would cover about $1.6 million of the project cost.
A motion to approve the contract and issue the notice to proceed passed on a recorded unanimous vote (8-0). Staff will move forward with contractor coordination and construction scheduling.
