Summary
County manager reported a $5 million award for the Man O'War Trail next phase and said engineering documents are near completion for the Hudson Mill Road bridge project with mobilization anticipated next week.
The county manager told the commission that Harris County has received a $5,000,000 award from the Georgia Department of Transportation TIA program for the next phase of the Man O'War Trail and that no local match is required for that award.
The manager said he had received notice from William Eason at the TIA office that the $5 million is available and that county staff and engineers are preparing to move forward. The next steps include engineering decisions about two railroad trusses that cross Mulberry Creek; county engineering and the contractor (Carter and Sloop and Matt Smith, county engineer, were mentioned) will evaluate remediation needs for the trestles and provide cost figures.
Separately, the Hudson Mill Road bridge/repair project is on a fast track: the county manager said he expected notice-to-proceed documents from the engineering firm within days and anticipated construction mobilization as soon as the following week. The manager asked staff to proceed with remediation and scheduling, noting the county aims to open the road after repairs.
Commissioners praised the county's trail ranking (No. 8 among Georgia trails for 2025) and discussed short-term maintenance to keep the trail corridor passable while longer-term construction is planned. The manager said staff would remove overgrowth and maintain the trail alignment prior to paving or formal construction to preserve corridor visibility and use.
The board did not take a separate vote on the TIA award at the meeting; staff will proceed with contract and engineering steps required to use the GDOT funds.
