Board approves sheriff hire, liquor license and fireworks permits; minutes and monthly receipts signed

The Jackson County Board on July 1 approved several administrative items, including the hiring of a part-time correctional officer, authorizations for monthly financial receipts, a retail native wine license and two fireworks permits.

Human resources director Becky Chapin told the board the sheriff’s department filled one of two remaining PRN corrections positions by hiring Christopher Atkinson, effective June 27, 2025. "I would ask for a motion to approve the hiring of Christopher Atkinson effective June 27 at an hourly rate of 21 41, including authorizing the county auditors to issue biweekly paychecks for the same," Chapin said. The board approved the hiring by voice vote.

The board authorized the chair and auditor to sign the county recorder’s reported fees collected for June 2025 totaling $58,577.03 and approved minutes from the June 24, 2025 board proceedings for publication in the official newspapers.

Licenses and permits approved included a Class B retail native wine license for the Friends of Jackson County Conservation for the period June 19, 2025, through June 18, 2026; the meeting record includes the license approval but the transcript does not contain a complete address or fee details. The board also approved fireworks permits: one to Terry Corvada for July 4, 2025 (subject to verification of completed application materials), and one to Great River Threshers for July 11, 2025 (dusk) with a rain date of July 12, 2025. Board members approved the permits contingent on application requirements being met for the July 4 event.

The items were handled by motion and approved by voice votes recorded in the meeting minutes.
