District 300 narrows student-superintendent advisory council to 21 after Socratic interview round

Adrian Harris, a district staff member, updated the Community Unit School District 300 Board of Education on June 24 about the superintendent’s student advisory council selection process.
Harris said the district received 111 applications and conducted multiple interview rounds. He described the final selection as a series of Socratic seminars: “When it was all said and done, we had 21 students that came in to participate in the Socratic seminars…we kept all 21 because we couldn't figure out how to cut anybody.”
Harris said the seminars focused on issues such as fast fashion and its trade-offs between student belonging and environmental impact; he said staff and principals served as interviewers. He told the board that the district will present the 21 students to the board, with a fuller update planned for the July meeting and students expected to attend in August.
Board members praised the turnout and the reportedly strong quality of the applicants. No board action was taken; the report was informational and the district will return with a full update next month.
