Resident urges Lake County to limit synthetic fertilizer runoff after algae blooms at Valley Lake

Isaiah Galitz of Wildwood used his three minutes of public comment at the Lake County Planning, Building, Zoning and Environment Committee meeting on June 25 to call for an ordinance limiting synthetic fertilizer runoff by households and agricultural operations.
"I live in Wildwood... Nitrogen runoff and phosphorus runoff have caused massive algae blooms in my community's lakes, including Gauges and Valley Lake," Galitz said. He described algae blooms as a threat to wildlife and recreation, and said they can produce odors and, in some cases, toxins that pose a danger to community members.
Galitz asked the board to pass an ordinance limiting fertilizer runoff; the committee did not debate the request during public comment but staff said they would follow up. Chair Altenberg reminded the public comment period does not involve committee discussion and said staff would follow up with Galitz.
There was no formal action tied to the public comment during the meeting.
