Grundy County GCIT schedules defensive driving, ergonomics and seasonal safety trainings

At a meeting of the Grundy County Insurance Trust, Laura, Loss Control Consultant for Loss Control Consulting Services, said the county held a four-hour defensive driving course in April with nine participants and plans to offer another session this fall.
The training schedule matters because GCIT members said ongoing safety education can reduce workplace injuries and vehicle claims. Laura outlined quarterly and monthly topics the trust’s safety committee will cover through December.
"On April, we conducted a defensive driving class using the National Safety Council's 4 hour curriculum, and 9 participants were present and we're planning to schedule another class come this fall," Laura said. She told trustees the last meeting had focused on driving hazards and that the upcoming Q2 reminders included bloodborne pathogens and ladder safety, including inspection, selection and the three points of contact.
Laura listed planned topics by month: hazard communication and safety data sheets in August; an on-site ergonomics visit in September to assess workstations; fire safety and chainsaw safety for applicable departments in October; basic first aid and health emergencies in November; and winter driving and shop safety (slips, trips and falls) in December. She also said upcoming committee topics will include microaggression, implicit bias and stress or loneliness at work, and she reminded employees about available Employee Assistance Program resources.
She described non-training initiatives under development, including QR-linked access to safety data sheets and training manuals and reconvening an active assailant response group for a refresher after leadership changes in that department.
Trust members asked no follow-up questions during the report. The safety committee last met on the 18th; trustees were told another on-site safety visit is scheduled for September and the defensive driving course dates will be set for the fall meeting.
