The Palatine Police Policy and Code Services Committee voted June 9 to recommend amendments to the village code governing the Fire and Police Commission that will broaden eligibility for police officer testing.
The changes described by staff would allow candidates who hold an associate degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Harper College, or who hold an associate degree and have been employed by the Palatine Police Department as a community service officer, or who have a combination of college credit hours and active military service, to be eligible to test for police officer positions. Staff said the modifications are intended to modernize hiring standards, expand the applicant pool, streamline testing and interview processes, and help the department compete in current labor markets.
“We’re changing this up a little bit to capitalize on our partnership with Harper College,” the chief told the committee, adding that the department will continue to maintain a four‑year degree requirement for new hiring in other contexts but wants to expand the pool of test‑eligible candidates.
The committee approved the recommendation; the item will be included on the consent agenda for full-council action.
