Advisory committee approves temporary pop-up sign at 29 Center Street with planter condition

The Nantucket Historic District Commission advisory committee recommended approval Wednesday for a temporary pop-up sign at 29 Center Street for a three-day event at the Faraway Hotel, provided the sign meets several conditions including wooden construction and anchoring in a planter.
The applicant asked the advisory committee to permit a 16-by-16-inch sign with 1-inch-tall lettering for a short July pop-up. The committee voted to approve a motion requiring the sign blade be fabricated of wood, anchored in a planter (a half-barrel was cited as an example), planted with vegetation, single-sided, and not to exceed 30 inches in height. The applicant and staff must file documentation showing final plans; the sign is to be temporary only and removed outside event hours.
The committee debated placement and materials before voting. Committee member Kevin Kuester said he preferred signage at an entrance and warned against using the planter as an excuse for a freestanding sign; Kuester proposed the half-barrel planter condition. Chair Mark Catone, who convened the meeting, said he was "less concerned about the ... fabrication for a 3 day event" and appreciated that the applicant planned to remove the sign outside active hours. Staff member Nikki Sherra asked that documentation be added to the record for the file; she noted previous approvals with similar conditions.
The motion to approve the sign with the wooden blade, planter anchoring, planting, 30-inch height limit and temporary-only status passed on a first-and-second: motion by Kevin Kuester, seconded by Paul Wolf; Kuester, Wolf and Chair Mark Catone voted "aye." The committee emphasized the advisory nature of its recommendation; the application and the advisory recommendation will be forwarded to the Historic District Commission (HDC) for final review.
The applicant confirmed the committee's conditions at the meeting and said the sign would be up only during active pop-up hours and removed overnight. Recording and filing of the final design were requested by staff so the committee can document compliance.
