Board advances heat and device policies for further consideration

Donna Downing described Policy 56.85, currently at stage 2, as guidance that came "down from the New York State governor's office" and said the policy spells out procedures when interior temperatures reach 82 degrees and then 88 degrees, including moving instructional activities to air-conditioned spaces when necessary. The board agreed to move the policy to stage 3 at the next meeting.
Board members also discussed the policy currently referenced as Policy 73.717 on student use of phones and electronic devices. The policy will be renamed "Use of Internet-enabled devices during the school day" to clarify that non-district Internet-enabled laptops and devices are included; Downing said the significant change is that only school-issued Chromebooks will be permitted while other personal Internet-enabled laptops would not be allowed under the revised policy. That item was also moved forward for the next meeting.
