Board approves upgraded engineering technician supervisor job description and grade

The Cook County Board of Commissioners approved an updated job description and new grade for an engineering technician supervisor in the Highway Department on June 24.
Human Resources presented the revision and said the position had been rescored under the county’s job-evaluation system from grade 190 to grade 200. County Engineer Robbie explained the change responds to anticipated departures that will remove institutional technical knowledge—Scott Benulken is scheduled to resign in October—and to the need for day-to-day technical supervision so the county engineer can focus on grants, planning and higher-level duties.
HR staff said the position had last been filled in 2022 and that restoring the supervisor role would place the county engineer above an engineering technician supervisor who in turn would supervise two engineering technicians. Commissioners discussed how the supervisory role frees the county engineer to pursue grant and planning work and moved to approve the updated job description and grade. The motion passed unanimously.
