Commission adopts budget amendments for ACES and Don Sofer Aventura High School

On July 1 the commission approved two ordinances amending fiscal‑year 2024–25 budgets for Aventura’s charter schools: the Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) and the Don Sofer Aventura High School (DSAHS).
City staff recommended the ACES amendment to add $338,030 in additional revenues and matching expenditures. The package includes $185,000 in additional capital outlay, $160,000 in increased district referendum funds for teacher stipends, an $88,000 expansion of tutoring hours and a $162,000 increase in pupil transportation costs tied to higher bus service expenses. The initial fund balance remained unchanged, staff said.
The commission also approved an amendment for Don Sofer Aventura High School that increases revenues by $1,589,765 and increases expenditures by $705,882. Staff cited higher student enrollment, additional capital outlay and ESSER reimbursements, expanded stipend and bonus payments, increased building maintenance and HVAC repairs, higher AP exam revenues and related costs, and increased management fees as drivers of the amendment.
Both ordinances passed on first reading without public comment. City staff said the amendments align budgeted revenues and expenditures with actual funding and operational needs for the remainder of the fiscal year.
