The Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce, with sponsorship from UAB Saint Vincent's, honored Hoover public safety personnel at the city's annual Public Safety Awards, a city-produced video says. The program recognized achievements from February 2024 at an event held at the Hoover Country Club.
The video, part of Hoover City's "Community Collectors" series, said Officer Joseph Nicholson was named the Hoover Police Department's 2024 Officer of the Year for investigative work on a shooting that involved a teenage victim. Detectives Adam Partridge and Austin Tubb were listed as runners-up.
The city-produced video said the Detention Officer of the Year award went to Field Training Officer Jacob Norris, credited for quick thinking and leadership during a colleague's medical emergency while maintaining safety and order. Firefighter Ryan Harkey was named Firefighter of the Year and was praised for his positive attitude, teamwork and training contributions.
Paramedic of the Year was awarded to Major Abernathy, who the video said has worked as a mentor and earned certification as a flight medic. The 2024 9-1-1 Operator of the Year award was presented posthumously to Andrea Luckett; the video said Luckett served Hoover's 9-1-1 center with calm and compassion for more than two decades and that her family accepted the award on her behalf.
The video framed public safety as a shared mission and thanked the honorees for their service. It closed by saying there are more stories to share in the Community Collectors series and encouraged viewers to stay tuned.
