Mill Creek parks board outlines volunteer, maintenance and capital priorities; youth board reports 1,837 hours

The Mill Creek Parks and Recreation Board on Tuesday provided a quarterly update to the City Council highlighting volunteer activity, event recaps and a prioritized list of park projects for 2025.
Board Chair Dennis Gobierski reported that the city’s youth advisory board logged 1,837 volunteer hours in the 2024–25 school year and currently has 62 members. The youth board’s top events included an “extravaganza” and trunk-or-treat, and members will conduct a city “adopt-a-street” cleanup on July 8 and participate in National Night Out on Aug. 5 and National Cleanup Day on Sept. 21.
Gobierski said the parks board has produced a month-by-month annual process document intended to better align volunteer efforts with staff schedules and upcoming events. The board’s top priorities for 2025 are collaboration with staff and council, maintenance and capital projects, and previously identified RPB projects. He said the library-park tot lot is moving forward as part of the larger library project and that staff will pilot a water-bottle filling station at the sports park.
The board also reviewed a list of potential projects that could be pursued if funding remains, including additional swings, adult fitness equipment, a dog park and improved lighting. The board is monitoring the “Friends of the Penny Creek Natural Area” group and the city’s process should that area be formally adopted into the park system.
Ending: The council received the quarterly report and had no follow-up action Tuesday. Board members asked staff to continue providing monthly updates and to bring bylaws to the board for a vote at their next meeting.
