The South Burlington City Council interviewed six applicants for the council vacancy created by the impending departure of Councilor Michael Scanlon and then, following an executive session, voted unanimously to appoint a candidate to serve through town meeting day 2026.
Councilors interviewed Anne Pugh, Elizabeth (Tommy) Walker, Linda Bailey, Lydia Diamond, Megan Emery (participating remotely from Paris), and Rachel Wolf Kinney. The interviews ranged across candidates' backgrounds in community service, business, public-sector experience and local volunteer work; questions from councilors focused on time commitment, priorities for South Burlington and views on affordability, climate action, and the city center/city green projects.
After the interviews the council entered executive session under the cited state statute for the purpose of discussing the appointment of a local officer. Upon return to open session a motion was made and seconded to appoint a candidate to complete the term vacated by Michael Scanlon; the council voted aye unanimously (five in favor).
Councilors thanked all applicants for stepping forward and encouraged those not appointed to consider other city committee vacancies. The new councilor will serve until town meeting day 2026; councilors said they will follow up with the appointed member on committee assignments and onboarding.
