House panel approves bipartisan study of the crimes code to identify outdated and duplicative offenses

The House Judiciary Committee approved House Resolution 99 directing the Joint State Government Commission to convene a bipartisan task force to study the crimes code and recommend remedies for overlapping or duplicative offenses, improper grading, outdated terminology and gaps in criminal liability.
Representative Kinkade, sponsor of the resolution, told the committee that recent bills demonstrate "why this resolution is necessary," pointing to outdated, unenforceable and redundant provisions in the criminal code. Committee counsel said the commission would have two years to make recommendations and that there were no amendments.
The committee recorded passage of the resolution 24–2 and said it plans to continue pursuing a broader review of the crimes code in future meetings.
