The school board voted to forward a request to the county HUE committee asking that educational capital funds be used to replace obsolete fire-alarm panels and to support a natural-gas service extension to the high school.
Dr. Adams, who addressed the board on facility needs, said multiple buildings need new panels and sensors and that parts for the existing systems are obsolete. Bradley Dingus from maintenance briefed the board; Adams said installation and procurement timelines would mean work could begin in August if the HUE committee and county procurement approve the funding and sole-source documentation. The total for the identified fire-alarm upgrades was presented to the board as roughly $131,000; the board discussed that the district’s annual educational capital allocation from the county is $250,000 and that the fire-panel request would account for more than half of that amount for one year.
Board member Mr. Flynn moved to send the fire-alarm upgrade request to the HUE committee; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. The board also approved a motion to send an ATMOS (natural-gas) proposal to the HUE committee to support installation of a gas line to provide HVAC fuel at Denny Goode High School; that measure was seconded and approved.
Board members discussed procurement requirements. Dr. Adams said the county will require a sole-source letter if the district proceeds with a single vendor; the administration indicated it has prepared the necessary documentation. Dingus estimated a three- to four-week timeline from purchase order to installation for panels once procurement is complete.
Several board members said they want to use the county capital allocation strategically and noted that the proposed fire-panel work does not include other safety improvements the district would also like to undertake, such as ballistic film and perimeter fencing.
The motions instructing administration to seek funds from the HUE committee were approved during the meeting.
