The Oak Harbor City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 25-17 on July 1, authorizing the mayor to order the lowering of federal, state and city flags on city property.
Communications Officer Maggie Aguilar presented the revised resolution. She said the original draft also addressed display of commemorative flags (examples discussed included Juneteenth and the Pride flag), but council members favored removing the commemorative‑flag language and retaining only the section that authorizes the mayor to order lowering of official flags when appropriate. No public comments were submitted in advance on the revised resolution.
Councilmember Weezner moved the revised resolution and the council passed it unanimously. Maggie Aguilar told the council the city will continue to follow state and federal guidance on flag protocol and will implement the mayor‑authority language in the adopted resolution.
