East Islip holds public hearing on districtwide school safety plan; 30-day comment period announced

The East Islip Union Free School District held its annual public hearing to present the districtwide school safety plan as required by New York law. The superintendent explained that the plan focuses on prevention, response and recovery and that it will remain open for public comment for 30 days before the board considers adoption.
The superintendent said the district is complying with Education Law 2801-a and Commissioner’s Regulation 155.17 and that building-level plans contain confidential operational details such as floor plans and schematics. She described the districtwide plan as a strategic framework governing district policies, coordination with local responders and communication protocols.
Key elements the superintendent highlighted included a district chief emergency officer role to coordinate with law enforcement and first responders, annual review and updates by a districtwide safety team that includes board members, teachers, parents, safety staff and transportation personnel, continuous training and drills, and integration of mental-health supports. The plan, she said, outlines prevention and intervention strategies, emergency-response protocols (lockdowns, secure lockouts, evacuations and shelter-in-place), and the district's incident command use.
The superintendent also described visitor-management procedures that require government-issued photo ID and screening through the Raptor system, locked doors outside normal entry points, and protocols for after-school programs. The district will post the plan on its website and accept written or emailed comments for 30 days; the board is scheduled to vote on adoption at its August 2025 meeting.
