The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a $12,330 professional services contract with Ward Scott Morrison Architecture to design reroofing and a canopy for the Metro Animal Shelter.
“This is funded by the previously approved $150,000 for Metro Animal Shelter Improvements, and it will leave us a little over $137,000 to perform the work after the design is completed,” a city presenter said. Jordan Morris (of Ward Scott Morrison) was present for questions.
Council members described earlier cooperative work among city, county and Northport to address serious sewer problems and other repairs at the shelter. A design firm representative said the proposed roof system is a flute‑fill overlay using a rubberized membrane and insulation to address leaks from the existing pre‑engineered metal roof with exposed fasteners. The design also includes a separate pre‑engineered aluminum canopy outside the crematorium; the canopy will not be built as an addition to the building structure but will be a separate element.
Council members moved and approved the contract by voice vote. Staff said the contract will allow the city to bid the work and focus the allocated funds on the roof during construction.
