Needham revitalization fund faces $6,000 shortfall for downtown banners

The Revitalization Trust Fund of the Town of Needham learned at its June 25 meeting that two longtime donors will not contribute this year, producing an estimated $6,000 shortfall in the banner and flag program budget.
The shortfall was described as roughly half of the banner-and-flag program’s annual operating cost. Committee members said the program runs on a quarterly contract and that delayed donations can produce a cash gap that jeopardizes contract payments.
Committee Chair (name not specified), Chair, Revitalization Trust Fund, told members he had contacted several frequent supporters and asked them to consider contributing; he also said he made a personal donation to cover the immediate gap so the town could stay on contract. “This is the first time this has happened since, let's see, since 2004 when we started the banner and flag program,” he said.
At the meeting members discussed the program’s recurring costs and maintenance needs. The chair said the fund budgets about $12,000 annually for the banner program and that flag replacement — because of wind damage — is an ongoing expense. He said the gap produced by the two donors represents about 50% of the banner program’s cost. He described routine maintenance needs including bracket replacement when wind damages flags.
No formal vote was taken. Committee members asked colleagues and friends to solicit annual sponsors for either the banner-and-flag program specifically or for the Revitalization Trust Fund’s general account, both of which the chair said are tracked separately from project-specific donations.
The committee agreed to revisit donations and the banner contract status at its next meeting in August.
