Monroe council considers student-driven resolution to join New Jersey 250 commemorations

Students and a teacher from Monroe Township Middle School asked the township council on Tuesday to support a state initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by designating Monroe Township as a participating “Revolutionary Community.”

Christie Visocki, a history teacher who led a student pilot of the History Happened Here program, described the students’ research into Monroe’s local history and their work with the Township Historic Commission and the library. Visocki said roughly 30 seventh- and eighth-grade students participated in the pilot and produced projects examining topics such as Jamesburg’s secession from Monroe, the construction of the original Monroe Township High School and the effort to bring Monroe its first public library. She told the council the students were visited by New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy and Education Commissioner Kevin D. Day. Visocki said the students were invited to work with filmmaker Ken Burns on parts of an upcoming miniseries.

The council had Resolution R62025-118 (supporting Revolution New Jersey / New Jersey 250) on the consent agenda; Visocki asked the council to consider the students’ request to designate Monroe Township as a Revolutionary Community and to be partners in commemorative activities. Council members recognized the students and the mayor and posed no public objections during the presentation. The item was part of the meeting’s consent resolutions and proceeded with the other routine consent agenda items at the meeting.
