Mayor: 37 veterans moved into Valor Point; township asks state to broaden income rules

Monroe Township officials said Tuesday that 37 veterans have moved into Valor Point, the new veterans housing development, and township leaders are pressing the state to make income rules more accommodating for veteran applicants.

Mayor Maya Delina and township staff provided an update to the council on occupancy at Valor Point. As of the council meeting, 37 veterans had moved in, two applicants were approved and expected to move in shortly, 10 applicants were in an income-verification compliance stage and 15 applications were being processed. Staff also said 25 non-veterans are living at the complex.

Mayor Delina said the township and Conifer, the property manager, have intensified outreach to veterans’ organizations across New Jersey to attract eligible veterans. Because some veterans who applied did not qualify under the program’s existing income thresholds, Delina said she sent a letter to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs asking the agency to consider adjusting income guidelines for veterans so more can qualify.

Officials said similar projects in other parts of New Jersey have experienced challenges matching income-qualified veterans to units and that the township’s outreach has increased applications statewide. There was no new timetable provided for any state response to the mayor’s request.

Council members and staff described the occupancy update as a work in progress; the mayor encouraged continued outreach to veterans’ organizations and noted the township will monitor applicant verifications and incoming approved moves.
