Council member Benedict told the Nashville Metro Council that the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) will run a temporary tactical urbanism demonstration on McGavock Pike from July 7 through July 10.
Benedict said the demonstration will run on McGavock Pike from Fernwood Drive to Riverwood Drive, at a corner she described as “a very dangerous corner,” and that the pilot will “narrow the eastbound lane of McGavock Pike to create protected space for people to walk, bike, and roll.” She added the project will also close the slip lane from McGavock Pike to Riverwood Drive and will use traffic cones and signs for the temporary changes.
The council member said the project grew from a student-led walk audit and an internship partnership with NDOT: “This is community led, and it really works.” Benedict said the demonstration is intended to test a design concept quickly and gather feedback; she said details would be emailed to her mailing list.
The announcement did not record any formal council action, vote, or longer-term commitment to make the trial changes permanent. There was no budget amount or permit detail provided during the announcement. Council members and staff did not specify required follow-up steps, approval thresholds, or whether any traffic engineering studies will precede permanent work.
For more information, Benedict directed residents to NDOT’s tactical urbanism program and said she will share project information with her mailing list.
