Covington approves cooperative agreement with St. Tammany Parish to pursue CDBG opportunities

The Covington City Council on July 1 authorized the mayor to sign a cooperative agreement with St. Tammany Parish that will allow the city to participate in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding applications through the parish.
Administration explained the agreement puts Covington back in a position to apply for CDBG-funded projects by applying under the parish as the applicant, as had been done for prior watershed and buyout efforts. “It opens us up more opportunities,” administration said, citing past projects such as lift-station panel elevation and buyouts in flood-prone areas where the parish had been the applicant.
Following a motion and second, the council approved the cooperative agreement by roll call vote. The agreement will allow the city to request that the parish include eligible Covington projects in future CDBG submissions when funding rounds are announced.
Administration said the cooperative approach is similar to earlier watershed initiatives and other parish-administered funding efforts.
