The Puyallup City Council issued a proclamation on July 1 recognizing July as Parks and Recreation Month and heard a briefing from Parks & Recreation staff on summer programming and park projects.
Why it matters: council members said parks and recreation assets are central to the city’s quality of life; staff described programs and capital work that provide recreation, youth programming and regional trail connections.
Staff briefing: Parks & Recreation Director Cody Geddes thanked the council for support and highlighted the department’s summer workload, noting staff open and maintain parks for long hours and that baseball games and youth programs run late into evening. Recreation Coordinator Marlis Francis said the city’s 10-week summer camp runs at the Memorial Center with more than 115 kids attending each week; staff launched a new Move Puyallup free fitness program with multiple weekly classes and reported about 350 check-ins in the first week. Geddes said the department expects to open the Van Lierp Park playground within a month and that skate-park design work is advancing.
Park system facts: at the meeting the council cited the city’s park inventory as 19 parks and roughly 387 acres of parks and open space serving about 43,000 residents.
Ceremony: the mayor signed the proclamation recognizing July as Parks and Recreation Month; staff accepted the recognition and thanked council and community partners.
