The Puyallup City Council on July 1 accepted completion of acoustical and lighting upgrades at the Pioneer Pavilion, concluding a multi-part improvement intended to improve speech intelligibility and stage presentation quality.
Why it matters: councilmembers cited longstanding complaints about poor acoustics and dim stage lighting at the pavilion, which hosts concerts, ceremonies and community events; staff said upgrades address those concerns and improve the facility’s utility for civic events.
Upgrades and follow-up work: Parks and Recreation Director Cody Geddes said the project installed 26 overhead acoustical panels and added acoustical material to the upper walls; pavilion staff report a “100% improvement” in acoustics for recent events. The stage received seven overhead lights with configurable presets and a podium monitor for presenters. Staff said a new, higher-lumen projector will be installed and audio-visual contractor Avadex will perform additional sound-system tuning; future design work is planned to study adding LED screens to reduce daytime washout.
Council action and remarks: Council member Johnson moved to accept the work as complete; the council approved the acceptance by voice vote. Members thanked staff for improvements and noted additional AV refinements planned for next season.
