Airport apron work underway; council and advisory committee discuss Buy America issues and hangar expansion

City staff and the airport advisory committee updated the council June 30 on ongoing apron reconstruction and planning work at the Caribou municipal airport.
The city manager reported the apron project began on June 23 and the airport remains open for arrivals and life-flight operations during construction. Councilor Bagley, who serves as liaison to the airport advisory committee, reported at the meeting that equipment purchases for 2025 ran into Buy America requirements; the committee has pursued work-arounds including splitting equipment purchases. "We've run into some issues with Buy America, and a percentage of that buy that needed to be made in America," Bagley said, and committee members developed an approach to address the requirement.
Bagley said the advisory committee discussed the value of bringing a mechanic to work on aircraft at the airport and included a letter from committee chair Dr. Charis in the meeting packet describing background on the issue. The committee also reviewed the airport master plan, which identifies potential future projects such as additional hangar space and a parallel taxiway to increase capacity and attract business.
Councilors noted the apron reconstruction and long-term master plan work could bring economic activity to the airport. No formal vote was taken on new capital projects during the meeting; the airport report was informational and advisory committee recommendations will return for future council consideration.
