Medical Lake council appoints four to advisory committees on November fireworks ballot measure

The Medical Lake City Council on July 1 appointed four people to advisory committees that will prepare statements for an advisory ballot measure on fireworks set for the November ballot.
The council named Lonnie Henderson and Shirley Whitey to the committee supporting a ban on fireworks and appointed Nate Robinson and Don Mayfield to the committee opposed to a ban. The mayor said the advisory vote is nonbinding; the appointed committees will work with independent legal counsel to draft statements for the voters’ pamphlet.
The mayor said letters of appointment will be sent and the committees will begin meeting quickly. The council approved the appointments by voice vote without opposition.
The advisory measure itself is nonbinding; should it appear on the ballot it will provide public opinion to the council but does not compel the council to adopt an ordinance.
