BCPS board adopts new mission: "prepare and empower scholars to take charge of their learning and future"

The Battle Creek Public Schools Board of Education adopted its strategic plan on June 23 and approved an amended mission statement that blends preparation and empowerment language.

Doctor Carter led a review of three proposed mission‑statement options and asked trustees to indicate which version they preferred. Trustees discussed the balance between language emphasizing community, empowerment and readiness for college and careers. Several trustees said they favored the option that is bold and visionary, while others preferred wording that emphasized shared responsibility.

After discussion, the board adopted option 2 with a friendly amendment to combine preparation and empowerment language. The final mission the board approved reads: “At Battle Creek Public Schools, we prepare and empower scholars to take charge of their learning and future so they graduate ready for college, confident in their careers, and committed to their communities.” Trustees indicated the change was intended to reflect both district supports and scholar responsibility.

A motion to adopt the strategic plan including the amended mission statement was moved and supported on the record and passed by voice vote. The strategic plan adoption will be reflected in district materials and used to guide upcoming work sessions and implementation steps.

Board members said the mission language will appear in the district strategic plan document and that operational definitions and measures will be developed during implementation.
