Cabell County Schools recognizes student winners of West Virginia Young Writers contest

Cabell County Schools used part of its July 1 meeting to recognize student winners of a county writing contest and the West Virginia Young Writers Day at the University of Charleston.
Students present included Genevieve Fleming (Barbersville Elementary), Gemma Reams (Altaizer Elementary), Evelyn Perry (Milton Elementary) and Madison Davis (Barbersville Middle). Several students read short summaries of their stories and discussed attending workshops in Charleston with published authors and presenters.
Evelyn Perry, a fifth‑grade student from Milton Elementary, told the board her entry titled A Nightmare or Not was about a child who gets "sucked into his phone" and faces challenges at the direction of a voice assistant. "My story was about a kid that got sucked into his phone, and Siri made him complete challenges... he wondered if it was a nightmare or not," Perry said.
Staff invited the students to the dais for photographs and congratulated all participants for entering. The presentation preceded the board’s business agenda items and was delivered as a public recognition; no board action was required.
